Frequently asked Questions
1. What qualifications do I need to get on to the course?
Entry requirements are individualised dependent. All potential learners must have a telephone or face-to-face discussion with the Student Support co-ordinator before enrolment:
GCSE
- Latest school report or appropriate contact (if possible)
- Willing to take an English and subject specific diagnostic to establish the correct level of work
AS
- Minimum 3 GCSE’s including English & Maths at C grade to study any AS subject. Human Biology, Biology and Psychology require a GCSE grade C or above in Science
- Willing to take an English diagnostic
- Willing to take an English diagnostic plus a Maths diagnostic if studying Human Biology, Biology and Psychology
2. How many GCSE or AS subjects can I study?
You will start with 1 GCSE or AS to ensure:
- The subject you have chosen is the right one.
- You are able to learn through our on-line programme.
- You have the time that is required to study that subject.
- You are able to study independently and are self-motivated.
3. When can I take up an additional subject?
- You will discuss this with the Student Support Co-ordinator during your progress reviews.
- You will be encouraged to have taken and passed a unit in your subject before taking on a second subject.
4. How long will it take me to study an AS?
One GCSE or AS subject will take a minimum of 1 year to complete. Most of our students study a subject over a 2 – 3 year period.
5. How many units will I study for an AS?
You will study 2-3 units depending on which subject you choose to study:

6. How am I assessed?
All subjects require one or two formal examinations which can be taken in January/March and in May/June. Subjects that have 3 units will also require you to complete coursework which will count towards your final grade.
- You can take 1 module in January and a second May/June.
- You can take all modules in May/June. All coursework must be submitted in May.
- You can sit one per year in either the January or May/June.
7. How many lessons per week will I be expected to complete?
This will depend on the subject that you are taking and the number of years you wish to study over. This can vary from 1 lesson per week to 5. We base lessons over 30 weeks, 15 weeks in term 1 and 15 weeks in term 2.
8. How long will each lesson take to complete?
This will depend again on:
- The subject
- How you learn
- Your personal circumstances
On average each lesson should take between 1-2 hours to complete.
9. What support will I receive while I am studying?
Every subject we offer has a subject specialist tutor who will:
- Provide guidance on how to complete your lessons.
- Answer to questions and queries regarding the course content.
- Mark and provide feedback to you regarding any tutor marked work.
You will also receive support from the Student Support Co-ordinator who will:
- Maintain regular contact with you regarding your progress.
- Provide guidance with any issues on accessing your lessons.
- Conduct reviews each term.
- Will be there to provide support with any issues regarding your subject choice, resources or tutors.
10. Will I be able to re-sit any exams to improve my grade?
It is possible to re-sit your exams; a decision on this will be decided after a discussion with the Student Support Co-ordinator.
11. What can I do after I have completed a GCSE or AS?
- You can study another subject at the same level.
- You can progress from GCSE to AS.
- You can progress from AS to A2.
12. When can I start?
It is a roll-on-roll-off programme so please free to contact us at any time regarding starting. (This may change depending on numbers)
