Apprenticeships on Show at Local Primary School

Leicestershire County Council leader Councillor David Parsons made a special visit to Holywell Primary School in Loughborough this week to find out first hand about the impact being made by Loughborough College’s sports coaching apprentices.
During the visit, Cllr Parsons was able to meet College apprentice Leandra Whelband who is based at the school and has taken responsibility for developing the physical education offering for pupils.
The 19-year-old chose an apprenticeship as she was keen to earn while learning, saying: “I’m definitely enjoying it. Being able to earn money and work while working is great.
“I wanted the experience of working itself. I’ve been learning on the job and I think it’s a better way of doing things – it’s better for future jobs.
“I’ve been assisting with running lunch time clubs and after school clubs and helping to promote play in break times.
“We’ve been introducing a wider range of sports to the school and getting the children to sign up to more clubs.”
Sports that have been introduced include Paralympic event Boccia as well as Ultimate Frisbee and New Age Kurling.
Physical Education Coordinator and teacher Lucy Feeley has been delighted with the apprenticeship programme, explaining that it has freed up a great deal of her time and has allowed the school to offer more to its pupils.
She said: “We’ve been able to introduce a lot of clubs both at lunch times and after school and have had a fantastic response from the children.
“Some of the clubs have been so oversubscribed we have had to split the children into groups over two terms.”
