Student Development

The Student Development Centre is based in B Block, room B020. Come to us if:
- You want to get involved in lunchtime activities (Enrichment), volunteering, fundraising, sport, events, trips, the Student Union, having your say
- You would like to book an appointment or be put in touch with the Chaplain (faith/ spiritual matters)
- If you need to access support with your health and wellbeing
- You can also drop in if you need help with something and are not sure where to go
Student Voice -Have your say
To make things better for students, we need to know what you think! You could become a Student Voice volunteer and help us with finding out student opinion and surveys or by giving your views in occasional focus groups. Please check out our volunteering section for more information and opportunities such as being a Diversity Adviser, Eco Adviser, Health and Safety Volunteer or being a member of the Faith Council. It looks great on your C.V. and involves only a few hours each year.
The College Committee, Student Governor and Course Reps (at least one per course) represent your views to the college. Please contact them direct, or via the Student Development Centre B020.

Get involved
The Student Involvement Awards
This is a great way to show prospective University’s and employers what you have achieved at college outside of your classes and grades. Taking an active role in extra-curricular activities as part of a college approved scheme will add depth to your CV and show an appetite for meeting new people and trying new things.
Gaining your award is simple. For activities such as volunteering, fundraising being a course rep you can gain points, just make sure all your points are submitted to the student development centre B020. There are three different levels of Student Involvement Award,
- Platinum Award 750 points
- Gold Award 500 points
- Silver Award 250 points
Drop into B020 to register for the Student Involvement Award scheme and to start collecting your points.
Nominations for awards
You can also be nominated for one of the individual awardsby a member of teaching staff or Student Support and Development.
You can also nominate yourself for Volunteer of the Year, by speaking to staff in B020. You will need to get a letter from the organisation who you volunteer with, supporting your nomination and telling us about how your volunteering has benefitted their organisation.

Course Reps
Course Representatives are elected for each course at the start of the year. This is your chance to represent the views of your fellow students at course meetings, course reviews and to help develop the College.
Awareness Programme
Throughout the year, you will find awareness displays in B Block foyer and corridor events taking place. Topics covered range from health, fitness and personal safety, to diversity, the environment and volunteering. Students are invited to get involved with raising awareness of different issues, by contributing to displays and helping to put on events.
Competitive Sport
In addition to sports through enrichment, there are also opportunities in both individual and team competitive sports. Trials for team sports take place very early in the Autumn term, so make contact as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Fundraising
The College’s charity of the year is Bliss the special care baby charity, who raise money to provide vital support and care to premature and sick babies across the UK. Additionally, there will be the opportunity to raise money for other special events such as Children in Need, Fairtrade Fortnight and Remembrance Day.
Enrichment Programme allows you to enjoy lunchtime activities such as sports, debating, babysitting course, music, dance, cooking, etc. enrichment is free and takes place in short blocks, about 5 weeks long. This gives you the opportunity to change your options throughout the year.
It is a chance to meet new people from other courses, relax and learn new skills or improve existing ones. For more information, look on posters around college, or drop into Student Development, B020.
Volunteering
Volunteering is a brilliant way to meet new people, have a lot of fun and gain real experience relevant to the workplace to help boost your employability.
You can volunteer through LSU Action, the College, community organisations or directly through the relevant charity. Pop into B020 and let us know what you are doing/ would like to do. We may be able to help you set something up, get recognition for what you are already doing or find funding for new ideas.

Volunteering inside College
Most volunteering opportunities in College require only a small amount of your time, but they are great for boosting the C.V. you can also get a certificate for your volunteering. Ask in B020 for further details on the opportunities below.
Volunteer positions are usually unpaid, however if you have a meeting over a lunchtime as a volunteer, you can normally expect lunch to be provided (please check in advance). Refreshments are often provided for meetings at other times.
