Not Sure?

We know it’s difficult to decide exactly which course you’re going to choose to study, and the different levels may seem confusing. To help you make your decision, we’ve put some guidance together to explain what the different levels mean.

The list below is a general guide to the qualifications that you will need for entry onto programmes at Loughborough College. At this stage, the course that you choose is not set it stone. It just gives us an idea of what you’re interested in studying. You will be able to change which course you want to apply for throughout our recruitment process if you need to.

Level 3

If you achieve 5 GCSEs at A*-C grade (including C/4s in English and Maths) you can usually* start on one of our Level 3 courses. Most of our Level 3 courses are 2 years and after completion would give you the qualifications and UCAS points that you need to start applying for degree level courses or to enter into employment. *some courses require you to start at Level 2 regardless of the grades you achieve. Examples include: Hair and Beauty, Catering and Electrical Installation courses.

Our A Level programme has slightly higher entry criteria. Please see here for A level entry requirements.

Qualifications you can achieve:

  • A Levels
  • Level 3 BTEC Subsidiary Diploma (equivalent to one A Level)
  • Level 3 BTEC 90 Credit Diploma (equivalent to 1 ½ A Levels)
  • Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma (equivalent to 3 A Levels)

Level 2

To study on one of our Level 2 courses you need to achieve 4 GCSEs at A*-D grade (including D/3 in English and Maths). The course will allow you to take this extra year to gain the knowledge and experience at Level 2, and to get your English and Maths grades up to a C/4. After successfully completing Level 2, you would then be able to move up onto one of our Level 3 courses to progress in your chosen area.

Qualifications you can achieve:

  • BTEC Award, Certificate and Level 2 Diploma
  • GCSE English and Maths

Entry Level & Level 1

If you do not meet the entry criteria for our Level 2 courses, you will be able to start with us on one of our Level 1 courses (at least 2 GCSEs at E-G grades) or one of our Entry Level programmes (Show us a commitment to learn, which can be demonstrated at interview). These courses are designed to provide you with the skills you need to move on to an apprenticeship, supported or skilled employment, further education, or independent living.

Qualifications you can achieve:

  • Entry level Award, Certificate and Diploma
  • BTEC Award, Certificate and Level 1 Diploma
  • Functional Skills English and maths

Extra information and Requirements

You may have studied a range of different types of qualifications or subjects not listed above - that's great! We will consider these as part of your application.

Please note: if you do not already have a GCSE grade A* - C / 9 - 4 in English and Maths, and you are aged 16-18, you will be expected to re-take the relevant qualification, or work towards it. All good employers and universities want you to have these qualifications, and we want to make sure that when you leave Loughborough College you are well prepared for those expectations.

Some subject areas, such as caring services courses, sport courses will require you to hold a clean criminal record due to the nature of the industry that you will be working in. We will also consider work and / or voluntary experience for adult learners
