Apprenticeship summary

Objectives:

To support the team/management in the running of the home, to enable the service users to lead a valued and fulfilling life, to maximise the potential capacity of all service users – physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. To follow Kings Residential Care Homes Ltd policies, procedures and all relevant legislation whilst working on shift and with the service users.

Main Responsibilities/Working within a team:

  • To work as part of a team in a constructive and supportive manner
  • To work along side the Team Leaders to ensure all service users needs are met (this includes taking instructions from Team Leaders to ensure that all tasks that are delegated to staff are checked and completed efficiently)
  • To be able to communicate effectively whilst working on shift – this includes communicating with other colleagues, management and ‘others’ such as professional people and parents. (This will involve handing over important information verbally via the communication book and house diary where necessary)
  • To work in partnership with others such as GPs, social workers, health professionals, parents and family to ensure the best outcome is being met for each service user
  • To report to the Team Leader or Home Manager with any concerns on shift
  • To protect all service users and have the confidence and knowledge (after relevant training) to whistle blow in the event of a safeguarding issue
  • To work within a flexible rota system adapted to meet the needs of the service users (This includes working weekends and bank holidays)
  • To fully support all of the services needs in a person centred way
  • To carry responsibility for the service, whilst on duty, ensuring that high standards of care and support are maintained
  • To attend regular staff meetings, training and personal supervisions and appraisals with the Home Manager & Team Leaders

Management of Service Users:

  • To advise, guide and support the service users with their individual needs according to their care plans and wishes
  • To support the service users in making choices on their behalf where the service user lacks mental capacity (choices that are within their best interest and can be appropriately justified)
  • To support the service users with their communication difficulties and use their preferred methods of communication at all times
  • To support and protect the service users with challenging behaviours and follow their current risk assessments and management plans in practice
  • To protect the service users from harm and have the confidence to whistle blow and follow relevant procedures if there are any suspected forms of abuse
  • To complete weekly/monthly Keyworker checks and involve parents where necessary
  • To offer all service users interaction to support them with a number of daily activities (in  house and within the community) This will include: swimming, horse riding, ice skating, personal shopping, supporting service users with daily living skills and appointments etc
  • To assist in ensuring all service users are supported to go on an annual holiday
  • To support the service users with personal care when needed – this includes washing, bathing, toileting, dressing, oral hygiene, grooming, nail care and applying medicated creams (18+ only)
  • To carry out moving and handling training and techniques for those service users whom need extra support to mobilise
  • To prepare meals and support service users with eating and drinking – ensuring they receive a balanced nutritional diet
  • To support the service users to complete daily domestic duties such as cleaning, laundry, sewing, hovering, recycling to ensure the home runs efficiently on a day to day basis and that all service users are encouraged to have independence
  • To handle petty cash and residents finances on a daily basis, when supporting service users on community activities and shopping on behalf of the company

Management of the Home:

  • To contribute to the overall running and health & safety of the home (this includes completing daily checklists in regards to: cleaning of service users bedrooms & bathrooms, kitchen duties, fire safety checks, laundry duties, company vehicle checks, outside ground checks and clinical waste checks)

  • To con tribute and take responsibility for weekly health & safety checks
  • To informally risk assess current & new tasks such as activities, moving and handling etc when working on shift and report back to management
  • To bring to the Team Leaders/Managers attention of any health & safety concerns as soon as detected and be responsibly for your own, other colleagues, service users and visitors safety whilst working on shift
  • To have knowledge and remain up to date with all risk assessments, care plans, policies, procedures and guidelines in place

Professional Personal Development:

  • To complete an induction/care certificate on starting employment
  • To complete regular training (as deemed necessary) to develop knowledge and skills for your role as a support worker or when requested by the Home Manager
  • To be observed and assessed in regards to Moving & Handling, fire safety, and administering medication (after relevant training)
  • To attend weekly catch up meetings during Apprenticeship
  • To complete training and Apprenticeship work on training days allocated to you by the home manager

Offer of Apprenticeship will be subject to DBS check
