The Advanced Apprenticeship Hairdressing is made up of qualifications and learning that will provide you with the skills and knowledge required to become competent in the role. The framework includes a balance of content in technical, business and interpersonal areas, designed to ensure you have an appropriate set of skills to operate in a salon environment.
This Apprenticeship provides you with the necessary skills and knowledge that prove occupational competence as a senior stylist. The hairdressing qualification covers a range of skills and knowledge such as creative cutting, styling, performing a range of chemical services, providing specialist hair and scalp treatments as well as consulting with clients.
The programme is delivered in the workplace with day release at the
Hairdressing Academy. If the apprentice is required to take Functional Skills,
these will be held on the same day. It is evaluated through a combination
of work-based assessments that enable the apprentice to complement skills that
are learnt, developed and used within the workplace with the knowledge
gained.The Hairdressing NVQ Diploma level 3 is designed for those who work in or
wish to pursue a career in hairdressing.
Who The Apprenticeships Is For?
This Apprenticeship programme is designed for candidates who have successfully completed Level 2 Hair Professional standard who wish to become fully qualified hairdressers.

- Creatively cut hair using a combination of techniques
- Creatively colour and lighten hair
- Hair colour correction services
- Create a variety of permed effects
Day release on a Monday (9.00am-5.00pm) for year 1 and Monday evening (5.00-8.00pm) for year 2, plus assessments in the workplace. Average duration 18 months.
Potential apprentices will have level 2 Hair Professional Standard and Functional Skills Level 1 or GCSE grade D in maths and English. Otherwise they can complete Level Functional Skills as required alongside their Apprenticeship. If functional skills are required they will be delivered in College sessions.
Maths and English
Apprentices must achieve level 2 English and maths (equivalent to GCSEs at grades A* to C) as part of their Apprenticeship framework. If maths and English are required these are typically taught in college specialist functional skills classes.
The Level 3 Hairdressing Apprenticeship is assessed through a combination of work based assessments that enable the apprentice to complement the skills that are learnt, developed and used within the workplace with the knowledge gained. Apprentices need to complete 20% off-the-job training during the on-programme phase of their apprenticeship. This can be tracked and monitored through their e-portfolio.
Having completed the Level 3 Hairdressing Apprenticeship, candidates will have the opportunity to progress to specific industry training relevant to their current position.
