This Apprenticeship is for anyone interested in working in a laboratory setting, supporting scientists and helping carry out tests, research, and investigations.

Course Content

This Apprenticeship involves working in a sciencebased laboratory in industry or education. During your Apprenticeship, you'll learn about the fundamentals of science, pick up practical skills, and take a qualification in applied science.

Units include:

  • Fundamentals of Science
  • Scientific Practical Techniques
  • Using Mathematical Tools in Science
  • Microbiology Technology
  • Chemical Laboratory Techniques


You will attend college for one day per week, and there will be visits to scientific establishments and talks from speakers. Your employer will provide a mentor to support you at work and time to study during the working day. If you are interested in becoming an apprentice, but do not have a job in a laboratory, we may be able to help.

Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs grade A* to C including maths, English and two science subjects

Progression Opportunities

The Advanced Apprenticeship programme can lead to Higher Education courses including Foundation Degrees or Higher National Certificates. This will depend on the requirements of your workplace.

The Apprenticeship course is part time to fit around your work commitments, you may be required to attend college on a day release or your tutor will visit you in the work place.

Intermediate and Advanced Apprenticeships available.
