The HNC/HND in Performing Arts (Dance) has been designed to develop your technical ability in a variety of styles, prereparing you for a successful career in the performing arts industry as a versatile dancer. The one year HNC or two-year HND, full-time course will provide practical training alongside developing theoretical knowledge and academic skills through studio-based research.

This programme is awarded by Pearson.

Course Content

The HNC/HND programme focuses on developing your technical skills as a dancer and performer in a variety of styles, which include contemporary, jazz, musical theatre and commercial dance.

You will begin to explore solo choreography whilst developing your academic skills through studio-based research, and will have multiple opportunities to perform as a member of a new professional dance company in our industry standard theatre.

The course allows you to develop research skills appropriate to a degree level course, as well as to explore dance criticism and analysis. The programme is designed to develop your independent learning skills, and your academic tutor will be on hand to provide support. You will receive up-to-date training from dedicated lecturers who have relevant industry experience as professional performers and choreographers. There will also be opportunities to engage with visiting professionals as part of a focus on developing your employability skills and ability to successfully promote yourself as a dancer.

Year two focuses on developing you as a choreographer, practitioner and educator, with a clear focus on employability. As a second year student, you will not only perform as a member of our new dance company, but will have opportunities to take on key production and management roles to enhance your professional training. You will explore the role of a choreographer and dancer in a variety of settings beyond a traditional theatre, including site-specific performance and dance for camera.
