Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) inChildcare

The Intermediate Apprenticeship in Children and Young People’s Workforce supports the progression and development of people wishing to work within a childcare setting. Introducing the apprentice to all the relevant, up-to-date government agenda within education, you will develop a solid understanding that will enable you to progress in this demanding, yet rewarding area.

The apprenticeship is made up of qualifications and learning that will provide apprentices with the skills and knowledge required to become competent in their chosen job role. The framework includes a balance of content in technical, caring and interpersonal areas, designed to ensure apprentices have an appropriate set of skills to operate in today’s childcare job roles.

The programme is delivered in the workplace (unless the apprentice is required to take Functional Skills), and evaluated through a combination of work-based assessments that enable the apprentice to complement skills that are learnt, developed and used within the workplace with the knowledge gained.

Who is this Apprenticeship for?

This Apprenticeship programme is designed for new entrants to a role in the Childcare sector and to provide progression and re-skilling routes for existing Staff.

Assessment Methods

On-programme is the learning phase for apprentices to apply the academic theory to their own organisations and role, and to capture the skills, knowledge and behaviours developed on the programme and in the workplace. To achieve this apprenticeship, it is necessary to complete 20% off-the-job training during the on-programme phase of their apprenticeship, this can be tracked and monitored through our e-portfolio.

On programme assessment includes: - Observation in the workplace, completion of assignments and assessments, as well as completion of portfolio of evidence demonstrating learning and development activities with their application in the workplace.

Entry Requirements

Apprentices with GCSE grades C/4 or above in English, Maths and ICT are exempt from Functional Skills. If apprentices have grade E GCSE or complete an initial BKSB Assessment at Entry 3 they can complete Level Functional Skills as required alongside their Apprenticeship.

English & Maths

Prior to completing the Apprenticeship, Apprentice must achieve Level 1 Maths & English and be working towards and attempt Level 2 Maths & English (equivalent to GCSEs at grades A* to C).

Progression Opportunities

  • Having completed the Children and Young People’s Workforce Apprenticeship can progress into Advanced Apprenticeship in Early Years Educator or Apprenticeship in Teaching Assistant

Delivery Model

The Certificate in Children and Young People’s Workforce apprenticeship is entirely delivered and assessed in the workplace. Average duration is 18 months.

If Maths & English Functional Skills are required, these are typically taught in college in specialist functional skill classes.
