Intermediate Apprenticeship in Childcare (Level 2)

This Apprenticeship is for people who work with children from birth to 16-year- olds (and their families) in settings or services whose main purpose is children's care, learning and development. Workers in this area make sure children are looked after, kept active, happy and nourished. They also help children develop social and practical skills.

Course Content

  • Certificate for the Children and Young People's Workforce (Level 2)
  • Award in Employment Responsibilities and Rights in Children & Young People's Settings (Level 2)
  • Functional Skills Maths (Level 1) (if required)
  • Functional Skills English (Level 1) (if required)


Mandatory units include:

  • Communication and personal development
  • Equality, inclusion and safeguarding
  • Duty of care
  • Child and young person development
  • Paediatric emergency First Aid, illness and injury
  • Health and safety
  • Positive behaviour and positive environments
  • Partnership working and maintaining and supporting relationships

In addition you will select from a wide range of optional units to tailor the Apprenticeship to the requirements of your company, such as:

  • Understand the Speech, Language and Communication Needs of Children and Young people with Behavioural, Social and Emotional Difficulties
  • Support the Creativity of Children and Young People
  • Support Children and Young People at Meal or Snack Times

Entry Requirements

  • To be over 16 years of age
  • To have secured employment in an appropriate role within the sector - If you don't have an employer, you can apply for Apprenticeship vacancies via Apprenticeship Vacancies Online (AVOL).
  • To have completed the setting induction procedure
