Action-packed forest adventure boosts Loughborough College student skills

A one hundred acre manhunt, sensory deprivation and tomahawk throwing were just some of the challenges facing Loughborough College students on an action-packed forest adventure.

Three skill-boosting days for Public Services students and Sport apprentices from the College featured more than twenty activities at Walesby Forest Adventure Activity Centre.

In a version of TV hit Hunted, the 100-strong group found themselves in a race against time with a pursuit across the Nottinghamshire Centre’s one hundred acres to reach an extraction point. With sharpened axes in hand and a different target in their sights, students were also introduced to tomahawk throwing. And donning total blackout goggles with only ropes for guidance, they attempted to follow a complex course in the depths of the forest.

“There was also archery, 3D swings, a zip wire, indoor and outdoor climbing, rafting, abseiling, caving… a huge range of activities. It really was an excellent opportunity for our students,” said Loughborough College Public Services progress tutor Simon Smith.

“Despite rain and wind hurling at us for three intense days – and no mobile ‘phones allowed – the students rose to every challenge, built on an outstanding range of skills and really enjoyed themselves.”

“We have 14 apprentices who all study with the College and this was excellent training for them, getting them ring ready for the year ahead,” added Guy Laurie, Chief Executive of Walesby Forest Adventure Activity Centre. “It really was a pleasure to work with Loughborough College on this joint venture. The public services students were brilliant – whatever the activity, nothing deterred them. It was a fantastic experience and everyone gained so much.”
