An award-winning Loughborough College graduate has paid tribute to the career boost his degree has given him.

Adam Swannack, who was awarded Distance Learning Student of the Year as he graduated with BA (Hons) in Leadership and Management this week, said his Loughborough College degree had played a major part in his promotion to Manager of the centerpiece swimming facility at Butlins, Skyline, in Skegness.

“I wouldn’t be where I am now without the support I received from the tutors at the College and this degree has helped me significantly. It’s enabled me to secure a top job running a facility multi-million pound venue.”

Based hundreds of miles away with his family, Adam commuted regularly to the College alongside working full time. “I’ve been with the company 14 years and when I applied for the job of Facilities Manager at Splash I knew it would be a sizeable jump from what I’d been doing before – this is a building which cost £20m and is one of the biggest venues on the resort.

“So when I was told I had been successful it was amazing – and there’s absolutely no doubt my degree had a major impact.

“I had been in my own bubble before I started the degree and suddenly I was learning about changes in my industry, about design and front of house, leading teams, managing finances… It’s opened up a whole new world of knowledge and expertise.

“I started out doing a Level 3 supervisor’s course and then a Level 4 and I just wanted to keep learning so I joined Loughborough College and began my degree.

“I was nervous. I worried it would be way out of my league but by the end of the very first lesson I was settling down and learning things that I was able to bring back to my workplace. I knew then it was absolutely the right thing for me and it just snowballed from there.

“I had a lot of personal issues along the way and the tutors, Iqbal, Dan, Sarah Jane, Donna and particularly Mat, helped me massively. It’s because of them that I didn’t have to abandon my degree, they enabled me to carry on.

“As far as I know I’m the first in my immediate family to get a degree. When I opened the letter confirming I’d got a 2:1 it felt unreal. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I’d be graduating.”
