Brexit top talking point for MP Nicky Morgan and Loughborough College students

Posted: 14th November 2016 - 12:04pm

Students put Brexit firmly on the agenda when Nicky Morgan visited Loughborough College recently.

The Loughborough MP faced more than 100 students eager to know how plans for Britain to leave the EU was set to impact not only on their future but also the future of the town.

Nicky Morgan, who had campaigned for ‘Remain’ ahead of this year’s referendum, was joined by Ian Bates from East Midlands Chamber of Commerce and openly answered a range of questions from the young audience gathered in the Arts Academy theatre on campus.

The MP said afterwards: "Brexit is clearly a subject of great interest to all age groups but particularly to the young who will be most affected by our negotiations with the EU.

“Loughborough College's A-level students asked great questions and it was good to hear their views on this important topic."

Lecturer in Economics and Business at Loughborough College, Yasser Arif, added: “As former Education Secretary and part of the Cabinet and our Member of Parliament Nicky Morgan has clearly played a key role in events around the referendum and was able to offer an extremely valuable perspective to our students – on courses including Law, Public Services, Economics, Business Studies and Government and Politics.

“The students voiced concerns regarding their future education and employment as well as the economy in the local area and were keen to talk about the government’s plans, Nicky Morgan’s thoughts on the issues and how she plans to represent us during this period of change.

“ Even when the event had ended students gathered around Nicky Morgan to continue the discussion and she took time to address all the points they raised. I felt very proud of our students and how they challenged and engaged with our MP. It was an interesting and informative opportunity and I know they gained a great deal from it – it has certainly provided an enormous boost to their studies.”

Aidan McNamee, 18, who lives in Quorn and is studying History, Politics and English Literature A-levels at Loughborough College’s Sixth Form, said: “We explained to Nicky Morgan that we were concerned about our prospects but it was hard to evaluate things when the Government was giving us no real indication of their plans and what the long-term impact of Brexit is likely to be. She agreed that we need to know what is happening and that Theresa May should be providing a clearer idea of where things are heading.

“It was good to be able to talk to our local MP, who is part of the system, and to see her being so open about these important issues. You can’t get everything out of a book and this is history being made, it’s topical – but it is also our lives and our future. It was reassuring to have her listen to our concerns and to address the uncertainty we are feeling.”
