Loughborough College student volunteers have been praised for their part in the success of a major event run by the A-T Society – a charity supporting people living with a disabling and life-limiting condition and which funds research to find a cure.
Early years education and health and social care students from Loughborough College joined children with ataxia-telangiectasia and their siblings for a day at Drayton Manor, helping with their basic care needs and accompanying them on the rides, while their parents attended the Society’s annual conference, at East Midlands Airport.
“Throughout the trip our 12 students maintained the standards of professional carers as well as those of the College, ensuring that all the children not only had their needs met in a respectful and responsible way but that they also had a day to remember,” said Loughborough College level 3 childcare and education course leader Kate Storr.
“The students were so passionate about this that many used their expenses to donate to the charity, helping fund future adventures for the children. They have also decided to adopt the A-T Society as their charity for the year and are looking forward to working closely with Society volunteer Nathan Murley in the future.
“Nathan was so impressed with the dedication and compassion demonstrated by the students that he is organising a special thank you for them and he has given their tutor individual feedback to use for university or job references.”
Nathan added: “The Saturday trip to Drayton Manor would not have been such a success without the students’ time and efforts. They were all brilliant and did a great job. Several parents approached me - their children had really enjoyed themselves and they wanted to say thank you to the students.”
