Christmas boost marks outstanding term of fundraising at Loughborough College

An outstanding term of money-raising activities has been topped with a Christmas boost to charity funds at Loughborough College.

A range of local and national causes have benefited from a host of seasonal sales and donations.

Health and Social Care students organised a film night, face painting, a raffle and tombola - with level 2 health and social care programme lead Sharon Geary inviting sponsorship not to moan for a day – and raising more than £470 for Young Minds. “It’s a charity particularly close to my and the students’ hearts.

“Mental health issues amongst young people are becoming an increasing concern and given the course I teach, I feel that raising awareness of the support available is crucial.”

A Christmas jumper day helped Save the Children with a donation of more than £100.00 and Children in Need benefited from more than £3,000.00 as a result of Sport students’ sponsored acitivites throughout the term, including male students volunteering to have their legs waxed by Beauty students.

Loughborough College Mental Health Coordinators suggested staff swap exchanging Christmas cards for a donation to Mind while almost £170.00 was raised for the charity with a white ribbon collection.

Beki Hughes, Holly Hughes, students studying IT and Media and staff member Richard Stacey boosted funds for Meningitis Now while the College’s preparation for work team collected donations for hampers which they raffled to raise funds for Leonard Cheshire Disability in Sileby.

Health and Social Care assessor Sharon Jarvis collected donations of blankets, coats, hats and scarves from Loughborough College staff to take along to the City Retreat in Leicester, which supports the homeless.

Childcare and Education course leader Kate Storr said: “Sharon also talked to students about the work of City Retreat and the items which might be beneficial to those they support and the they really came up trumps, not only donating warm clothing but lots of toiletries, non-perishable food, tea bags, cakes…

“Sharon took some of the clothing in in the middle of the really cold snap and representatives from the Care team took the rest when they helped out at one of the Retreat’s regular evenings and gave more than 60 homeless people a package of the students’ donated items.”

Loughborough College wellbeing mentors Robyn Leader and Dani Staniforth said: “Our learners and staff have worked so hard and we are really proud to have supported them in raising money for so many worthwhile causes and charities.

“Thousands of pounds have been collected and donated this term alone and we are hoping to build on the total with a host of fundraising across the College in 2018.”
