A Sport degree student has today been announced as winner of the award for Dissertation of the Year at a major Loughborough College event.

More than 100 students and staff gathered for the sixth annual Higher Education Sport Research Forum, showcasing the final year BSc projects of sport, exercise and fitness students, before Rebecca Grundy was named in the top spot.

“Becky studied perfectionism, burnout and stress and focused on the previously under-researched area of its relationship to cricket players, and specifically elite female cricketers.

“Recruiting high-level athletes, Becky took on a complicated analysis with a study and website she completely designed herself – and all while playing professional cricket herself in Australia,” said Sarah Larnder, Loughborough College Higher Education Sport curriculum manager.

“Becky uncovered fascinating links between levels of stress and coping mechanisms – even revealing how it can protect against burnout and may be a positive, helping female cricketers perform at an elite level. These findings are something we haven’t yet seen in other literature – it’s a truly enlightening study.

“We also gave special mention to Emily Rodbourne for her innovative research into teacher and student cooperative learning in physical education, which has the potential to have significant practical benefits in real life.

“Today all our students demonstrated their knowledge and passion with impressive presentations for their projects, which have helped to fill voids in existing research or produced insights which could have important applications.

“This day is always a very proud moment for me and all the HE Sport staff, as it is not only the culmination of the students’ year-long research project, but of their time studying with us.

“We have seen these students grow academically and emerge as well-rounded and highly employable individuals. It is really a day to recognise and celebrate the journey they have taken, and now on the verge of graduating, we wish them all well with the next steps on their career pathway.”
