Emergency frontline experience for Loughborough College students

Loughborough College students were given a glimpse of the emergency services frontline recently when they saw real life 999 calls in action.

Thirty Public Services students were offered access to the Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Control Centre and gained first hand insight into the high pressure, vital work carried out by its operators.

“This was the first time we had taken students behind the scenes to see just what happens when those crucial calls come in.

”They witnessed live situations and were able to hear from people whose skill in giving guidance, extracting vital information and dispatching services can mean the difference between life and death,” said Nigel Wright, Lecturer in Public Services at Loughborough College.

“Our students are learning in lessons about responding to emergencies but to spend time with Control Centre operators who have actually talked to people trapped in burning buildings and helped protect them as they trace their call and dispatch a fire crew has given them an incredibly valuable insight into this important work.”
