England women rugby announce five Loughborough College players amongst U20 side for France

Ahead of the second clash against France Women U20 on Saturday 16 March, England Women U20 head coach Jo Yapp has today named a match day squad which includes five Loughborough College rugby players.

Bryony Field, Ellen Ramsbottom, Anya Richmond and Amelia Harper helped England Women defeat Army Women 35-5 in February, with the quartet all amongst the starting XV and Jodie Mallard non-playing reserve.

The five players will once again join the England side when they host France at Newbury RFC this weekend, with Loughboorugh College sport student Amelia as vice-captain.

Amelia, Anya, Bryony and Ellen are all part of the high performance women’s rugby programme at Loughborough College and train and play in the Tyrell’s Premiership Loughborough Lightning side. In addition, Anya, Bryony and Amelia are part of England 19s while Amelia is also with England 7s.

In the first of their two-game series last week at the Stade de Hautpierre in Strasbourg, a tough first half saw England concede the first try after two minutes and finish the first half 24-0 down. After conceding a fifth score, the side rallied and got on the scoreboard through flanker Amelia and Anya, with the final score 31-12 to France.

“Despite the result not going our way last weekend I’m really pleased with how the squad have come together this week, analysed our game and identified where we need to improve to build on our performance this weekend,” said Yapp.

“It’s very unfortunate about the result last week, but with the second test to come it will be good to see how the side responds. It’s fantastic to see the development of these young players. They have worked so hard and really deserve all the opportunities they get,” said Loughborough College head of women’s rugby Brad Jones.

“Our performance programme players are training and playing with the College Academy side – who were both Roslyn Park and AoC Sport national champions last year – and at Lightning, alongside major names in women’s rugby.

“Growing numbers of the athletes we are developing on the programme are achieving these high standards in their rugby and these four players being selected for England under 20s shouts that loud and clear.”
