Two sixth formers from Loughborough College have been named amongst a group of only five students selected for a coveted work opportunity with global giant 3M.

Adam Danby and Mickail Hemono will join the science-based technology company, listed as the world’s most ethical for three years in row, for a unique insight into the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry.

The 3M Science and Technology Work Experience Week will see the Loughborough College students spend time across a range of areas involved in bringing a pharmaceutical product to market, from research, design and development to manufacturing, engineering and marketing.

Mickail, 17, who is studying for A-levels in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Computer Science at the College, has also secured a place on the Engineering Development Trust residential course delivered by the University of Edinburgh.

“My teachers at the College told me there was an opportunity to get an insight into studying electrical and electronic engineering as well as to experience a bit of University life at Edinburgh and I jumped at the chance.

“I spent ages putting together a personal statement talking about my hobbies such as programming and dismantling and repairing electronic equipment, about my personality and of course why I was so keen to apply.

“Apparently more than a thousand students across the UK were in the running – so I was pretty happy when I received an email to say I had been successful.

“The work experience at 3M was another fantastic opportunity recommended by Loughborough College and again I believe there was a lot of competition. Being one of only five students selected really was incredible.”

Applied Science BTEC student Adam, also 17, agrees: “I was overwhelmed to be told I was going to be part of such a select group at 3M.

“I work very hard at College and put just as much effort into my application and was surprised but thrilled when the email came through.

“My parents are so happy for me. We all celebrated together.

“This is a career path I am really keen to take and this will be a wonderful opportunity to experience the industry first hand. I can’t wait.”

The Engineering Development Trust residential course delivered by the University of Edinburgh takes place between 19th and 23rd June and the 3M Science and Technology Work Experience Week begins on 10 July.
