Gothic horror Dracula offers powerful season opener at Loughborough College

A performance inspired by the Gothic horror Dracula offered a powerful season opener at the Loughborough College Arts Academy theatre this week.

With the backdrop of the classic Bram Stoker tale introducing the now famous Count, Performing Arts students from the College took the audience from chilling Transylvanian castle to unsettling Bedlam asylum in London.

The dark atmosphere built as a straitjacket was struggled against and fangs were glimpsed with the mood made even more intense by the soundtrack, an original composition from Music student Michael Thornley.

“The theatre was packed and the feedback we had from the audience afterwards was incredible. They said they could not believe the high standard so early in the term and called the performance ‘astounding.’

“We wanted to challenge our students and take them out of their comfort zone and this certainly did that,” said Emma Ledsam, Creative Arts lead at Loughborough College.

“Every cast member was on stage at all times but they stayed focused and in character and as lighting and music changed to reflect the movement from scene to scene their costume and prop changes were beautifully executed. They were so professional.

“Only five weeks into term it is astonishing the ability and potential already visible amongst our students.

“We are going straight into rehearsals for our next production and that will be a massive gear shift - from vampires and darkness to jazz hands for our panto Cinderella. But I have no doubt our students will once again rise to the challenge.

“It is going to a fantastic year of performance at Loughborough College.”

The cast of Dracula featured: Ryan Bowley, Joshua Brown, Rhys Evans, Malakye Galloway-Baxter, Mollie Harvey, Charlene Henson, Caitlin Higgitt McAlister, Milko Hristov, Charlotte Jarram, Brandon Preston, Josh Reid, Skye Seputyte, Roby Singh, Salli Stocks, Rhi Wignall, Emily Ballard, Emelia Fortuin, Shannon Gamble, Lauren Glasgow, Lizzy Hardy, Taylor Leak, Niamh Melton, Emma Merrey, Joseph Obaje, Amber Payne, Lucy Robbie, Natasha Ryan-Ormiston, Jenny Stanton, Myron Storer and Sophia Wallis
