Children across the local area have received surprise packages created by students at Loughborough College.

The hampers containing clothes, books and toys were distributed to more than 35 foster care families in Loughborough over Christmas.

“Our students were keen to offer help close to home over the festive season and gathered donations from family and friends to put together a wonderful collection of items for young children as well as teenagers currently in care in and around the town,” said Kerry Shay, Caring Services lead and assessor at Loughborugh College.

“A representative from Fostering Leicestershire came to talk to our students about just how much it meant to these children to know people were thinking of them at this time of year.

“Our students were concerned by the shortage of foster families and, after hearing about the application and interview process, they took away information for family and friends they felt sure would be interested.

“We also learnt about the need for more foster-friendly employers who can accommodate carers by offering the flexibility they may need to support children.

“The visit offered our students a fantastic insight into fostering and the importance of what they had done and they were thrilled to hear that the Council plan to return to Loughborough College to give feedback from the children who received the hampers.”
