Loughborough College has helped professional Rugby League’s London Broncos seal a win against the North East.

Louis Godfrey and Jacob Ogden, who study with the College on the RFL Midlands Academy programme, joined the U19s side this week to secure the victory.

Together with fellow Loughborough College student Sam Davis, Godfrey and Ogden recently made their debut for the Broncos against Castleford.

All three young players have been on trial with the side in London for the past few weeks, combining this with their training and studying at the College.

Soon after the match against the North East got underway, Jacob Ogden went over for his first try of the game and with the scores at 8-0, Louis Godfrey went across to put the Broncos even further ahead -but an unsuccessful conversion left the scores at 12-0. At the break the Broncos were leading 22-4.

In the second half Ogden went over for his brace just minutes from the final whistle, after Dan Wellden threw a great pass to set him up. With a final score of 36-20, the Broncos earned their first win of the season.

Ogden, Godfrey and Davis enjoyed further victory when they and their team-mates at the Midlands Academy took this year’s U19s league title after winning all nine of their North West Division games and topping the points table.

“It has been a highly successful year for the RFL Midlands programmes with many players securing trials with Championship and Super League clubs.

“This provides great future opportunities for these young players, including the chance to secure contracts,” said Matt O’Dowd, Sport Work Related Manager at Loughborough College.

“To be playing for the London Broncos U19’s is a testament to Jake and Louis’s work ethic over the past two years. Sam is one of the first to be offered a trial at this level in year one of the programme, so to achieve this is outstanding - and great encouragement for Sam and the other first year players.

“The College RFL Academy side as a whole has shown their superior ability with their resounding success in the league.

“The platform this has provided for the players to demonstrate their skills is incredibly valuable in aiding their progression within the game.”
