Loughborough College high flier is cabin crew success

A Loughborough College student is flying high after securing a coveted cabin crew position with a leading airline.

After undergoing a rigorous selection process, which included spending a month away from home for intense training, Alice Geary was delighted to discover she had been successful.

The 18 year old, who studied for both a level 3 Certificate and a Diploma in Travel and Tourism alongside a Cabin Crew course with Loughborough College, this week took her first flight as part of the crew - to Ibiza.

“It was almost like the X-Factor for the first stage of Alice’s assessment with a full day where candidates were progressively knocked out until only a handful remained,” said Zophie Horsted, Travel and Tourism lead at Loughborough College.

“We had supported Alice’s advance preparation for a range of challenges including writing and delivering Public Address speeches, such as welcoming passengers on board, testing of English as well as Maths skills, with elements like currency conversion, group activities and a one on one interview.

“Alice was thrilled to still be there by the end of the day – but then came an intensive month-long residential training course but no guarantee she would come away with a job offer.

“The key element of the training was Security and Emergency Procedures which, while everyone hopes they will never be necessary, are vital.

“Alice learnt how to deal with things like smoke in the cabin, how to evacuate passengers one per second down a slide and she spent time in the pool mastering safety rafts. There were tests every day, sometimes two, and Alice consistently achieved full marks.

“She then came back to College and made up the month of work she had missed and completed all her assignments!

“After several very anxious days, the airline told Alice she had been successful and they would like to offer her a position with them.

“This was a lengthy and highly competitive process which understandably demands very high standards, so we are extremely proud of the dedication and commitment Alice has shown throughout and of her achievement in being invited to join the airline’s cabin crew.”

From September 2017 Loughborough College will be offering the Level 3 City and Guilds Diploma in Travel and Tourism with Cabin Crew.
