Loughborough College raises funds and awareness as Dom’s Cup tribute returns

The return of an event paying tribute to a former Loughborough College student has raised funds and awareness of vital issues and services.

Last summer the College hosted the inaugural Dom’s Cup in honour of Dominic Sullivan, who passed away in October 2016. This year’s football match and afternoon of fun once again supported national charity Papyrus and Ashmount School.

Loughborough College engineering student Cyrus Brierly, who was Dom’s close friend, helped organise the event and attendees included Dom’s mum Helen Sullivan, his younger brother Jake, older brother Stephen and the former student’s classmates and friends, with the aim that the activities would help highlight mental health issues amongst young people.

“Jake greeted the teams before the match and, after a good quality game with ‘Blue’ winning for the second year running - by a score of 4-0, he collected the trophy for the team which was captained by Cyrus,” said Loughborough College equality and diversity manager Des Gentleman.

“With face painting, a bouncy castle and various other activities, all ages enjoyed the day along with Dom’s mum Helen and family and friends.

“Stephen, drew the raffle winners, with prizes generously donated by the Radmoor Restaurant and Spa and big thanks also go to the college staff who planned and ran the event, to Loughborough Student Union volunteers for their help and to Charterhouse PLC for providing printed t-shirts for the teams.”

More than £350 was raised for Papyrus – dedicated to the prevention of young suicide – and Ashmount School .

Helen said: “It is a real privilege to be part of this event again. A tree in Dom’s memory has been planted at Loughborough College and the College and his friends continue to be a major part of our family’s life so this is very special.

“But beyond the event’s personal significance it is incredibly important that we continue to raise awareness of mental health issues amongst young people.

“It is vital we acknowledge that this is something which is sadly affecting increasing numbers of our young people and we need to do all we can to let them know there is support available to them.”
