Loughborough College is delighted to announce it has been selected by Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains Brixworth to help power Formula One Power Units.

The College will be training engineers set to join the 500-strong team which oversees the design, manufacture and testing of Formula One Power Units for works team Mercedes AMG Petronas as well as customer teams for Racing Point and Williams Racing.

Apprentices from Loughborough College will have the opportunity to work on engines which have already won five Formula One Constructors’ Championships and five Drivers’ Championships.

Loughborough College CEO John Doherty said: “Mercedes- Benz competed in the first ever motor race in 1894 and in Formula One more than six decades ago, in 1954, and we are privileged to have been selected to deliver a new generation of engineers who will become part of such a rich tradition.

“Our own College heritage spans more than a century of engineering teaching and training together with our unique Motorsport UK programme, which is the country’s only course designed for racing drivers, and we are thrilled to be building on that, supporting the leading edge work of Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains.”

Paula Allerton, Head of Employer Engagement and Apprenticeships at Loughborough College, added: “We were invited to be considered alongside six other colleges and it is wonderful to have been selected to bring our expertise to the partnership, working alongside a British manufacturer who is world-renowned in Formula One.

“Being brought on board by Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains offers our engineering apprentices the chance to work at the forefront of technological innovation. It is an exciting opportunity and at the College, the team behind our Ofsted Outstanding-rated apprenticeships can’t wait to get started.”
