A student from Loughborough College has been successful in Aberystwyth University’s Entrance Scholarship competition.
Bethan Evans, 17, who lives in Loughborough and studies A-levels in Geography, History and English Literature with the College, was awarded an Open Scholarship based on her strong performance in specialist exams.
“I went to an open day at the University and really liked it so when I found out Geography, which I planned to apply for, was one of the subjects where you could sit exams which might earn you a scholarship, I jumped at the chance.
“Loughborough College was really supportive, enabling me to arrange to take the exam there and my teacher Ross Bowman ran through past papers with me.
“There were going to be two one and a half hour papers, one in Physical Geography and one in Human Geography, covering topics I’d be encountering at university but wasn’t familiar with at A-level so I did lots of extra work to prepare.
“I was so thrilled when Aberystwyth got in touch to say that as a result of what I had achieved in the exams they would not only be offering me £500 per year towards my studies – but that they would double this if I achieve ABB in my A-levels.
“I’d grown up seeing my dad doing geography research as part of his university work and that got me more and more interested and enthusiastic about the subject. Now it’s my dream to follow a career in geography.”
“This is a tremendous achievement,” added Loughborough College Sixth form area lead Aaron Savva. “We supported Bethan and she was incredibly focused. These entrance exams recognise academic ability and her hard work and talent has seen her offered one of only a handful of scholarships, taking her a step closer to realizing her career ambitions in geography. We are all very proud of her.”
Bethan has also been given an unconditional offer from Queen Mary, University of London and conditional offers from UCL and Royal Holloway.
