It was an inspiring and charity fund-boosting International Women’s Day 2019 at Loughborough College – with Events and Hospitality Management degree students marking the global day of celebration and campaigning with a host of activities.

The student organisers were hoping to repeat the success of their International Men’s Day event in November, once again overseeing everything from venue planning, hospitality and promotion to encouraging support and donations and arranging guest speakers.

Jen Glover, Josh Giles, Harry Sutton, Bianca Lumsden and Tessie Morris, who are all studying on either the FdA Events or Hospitality Management courses at Loughborough College, aimed to not only raise vital funds for Rainbows but also to inspire their fellow students.

“Our students took this from theory in the classroom to real life event with months of planning and hard work,“ said Shabana Sumra, Loughborough College lecturer and course manager for Event and Hospitality Management who, alongside colleague Donna Quansah, lecturer and course manager for Leadership and Management, supported the group inside and outside the classroom for the events.

“They did it all, from background research to gathering donations for a sale and raffle which included fantastic prizes such as an iPad, they looked at health and safety as well as room decoration, they compered and they brought together a wonderful line up of speakers.

“Charlotte Hamadache, Dr Helen Bailey, Iqbal Ullah, Lucy Morrish, Kaled Hussain and Rebecca Ladds talked about the women who have influenced them and impacted their lives and the audience was certainly inspired. A white board was filled with responses from people talking about how they had been moved by the presentations and sharing their own quotes and thoughts highlighting the women who meant something to them.

“The students should be extremely proud of what they achieved in marking this important annual global event – and for raising £280 for Rainbows.”
