Loughborough College students have joined an army veteran to help boost funds for the Royal British Legion poppy appeal.

Alister George and James Smalley, who both study public services with the College, offered their support alongside retired army sergeant Stevan Bateman – raising more than £1280 for the cause.

“The students looked very smart in their uniforms and were proud to stand alongside an ex-serviceman. They were fascinated to hear all about Stevan’s experiences,” said Loughborough College public services lecturer Shaun Hession.

“During his army career, Stevan was posted to locations including Germany and Northern Ireland and was on to be rushed off with rapid response to Zimbabwe and the Falklands.

“Alister and James also enjoyed chatting to shoppers as they collected donations at the Tesco Superstore in Ashby de la Zouch and they were certainly great role models.

“The experience of joining Stevan gave both our students a valuable insight and they made a great contribution to boosting funds for a wonderful cause.”
