Loughborough College students found themselves taking the plunge when the Royal Navy put them through their paces for an official fitness test.

Public services students were invited to the Royal Navy School of Physical Training on board HMS Temeraire in Portsmouth to take part in the swimming test which must be passed to gain admission to basic training with the naval service.

The strongest swimmers amongst the Loughborough College group even wore heavy overalls as they jumped into tread water for two minutes and then swim two full lengths of the Olympic-sized pool before getting out without using the steps.

“We were doing it against the clock and it was tiring and difficult. The overalls really drag you down– but it was so enjoyable,” said public services student Yvie Pollard.

“I plan to join the armed services and definitely feel more prepared for my fitness assessment now I have done this.

“The whole trip gave us all a great insight into life in the navy.”

The students toured the historic dockyard visiting HMS Victory, best known for her role in the Battle of Trafalgar, and the National Museum of the Royal Navy – and even slept aboard HMS Bristol, a destroyer whose career included the Falklands War and has now been converted into a training ship.

“We had to go down through so many hatches to get to the sleeping quarters and everything got smaller and smaller with each level. But although we were just above the water line it surprised me how little movement there was.

“We have so many exciting experiences as part of this course. I had planned to do A-levels but I am so pleased I joined public services at Loughborough College. I love it. I’ve picked up lots of skills and it’s been a massive boost to my confidence.”

Loughborough College public services progress tutor Simon Smith added: “A number of our students are considering a naval career but the whole group found it a fascinating experience - from glimpsing some of the service’s history to having a go at the swimming test to sleeping on board ship. We are very grateful to the Royal Navy for offering us this opportunity.”
