Loughborough College has unwrapped a Wonka bar and revealed a golden ticket performance inspired by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Performing Arts students invited audiences to share in the fantastical adventures of Charlie Bucket, Grandpa Joe, Willy Wonka and an eccentric cast of characters from the beloved Roald Dahl tale.

A river of chocolate, a glass elevator and children juiced, shrunk and squeezed through a tube were brought to life in an outstanding physical theatre version of the story developed by the 12 strong Loughborough College cast.

“The students worked together as an independent theatre company would, coming up with their own ideas, choosing music, sound effects, lighting and costume and directing. We supported them and they took on board anything we said but essentially it was all their own hard work – and they produced a thrilling show,” said Loughborough College Performing Arts lecturer Melanie Potts.

“Using their bodies and a few props the cast produced a stream of chocolate and the factory machinery making the sweets, they gave us the room that shrinks Mike TV and brilliantly presented the disturbing fate of the other golden ticket winners and we were transported to the happily ever after ending with the help of a glass elevator.

“The audience had a wonderful evening and the students really got a confidence boost from the quality of performance they had been able to produce. It really is remarkable what they achieved.”
