MEP offers Loughborough College students behind the scenes glimpse of European Parliament

Loughborough College Sixth Form was given a glimpse behind the scenes of European politics during a recent visit from MEP Rupert Matthews.

The European Parliament representative for the East Midlands shared aspects of his work in Brussels and across the region with 40 A-level Politics students before inviting questions.

“I was delighted to be able to speak to students from Loughborough College,” said Rupert Matthews. “They asked some very interesting questions and I could tell that they all have a great passion for politics and debate. I’d like to thank all the students as well as the excellent teaching staff for inviting me.”

Loughborough College CEO John Doherty added: “It was a pleasure to welcome our region’s MEP, Rupert Matthews, to the College. Our students gained an insight into his political work in Europe and it was wonderful to see them seize the opportunity to engage in some lively debate on current issues. It was a fascinating visit and there is no doubt it will enhance their A-level studies.”

“Rupert presented an overview of the inner workings of the European Parliament and explained its similarities and differences to the UK political system,” said Aaron Savva, curriculum manager at Loughborough College Sixth Form.

“The students had prepared questions for Rupert on many interesting topics, including Brexit, and approached him afterwards to say thank you – and in some cases were inspired to ask about pathways into politics.

“At Loughborough College we aim to offer our students every possible opportunity to enrich their learning with industry experience and to apply the theories they are taught in the classroom practically, to real life environments. Rupert’s visit is an example of this. It was enriching, engaging and educational - an opportunity that our A-Level Politics students will remember and which will influence their progression.”
