Music industry insight for Loughborough College students

Industry insiders have been giving Loughborough College students an insight into a career in music.

Recording artist Tian Mhende and Kate Rounding, project leader for local community music charity Pedestrian, shared their expertise with a group studying music qualifications, including at degree level, with the College.

Tian played tracks from his recent recording session at London’s Red Bull studios and talked about how his involvement in one of Pedestrian’s youth music programmes helped him.

Kate meanwhile talked about her role and introduced the idea of a portfolio approach, where fledgling music artists are able to develop and maintain a performance career supported by working in a related field.

“The nature of the music industry means this is very common, so it was really useful for our students to find out more about it – and first hand from a key player in community music, which offers many opportunities for musicians looking at a portfolio career,” said Loughborough College music lecturer Simon Clarke.

“The students were fascinated to hear about the work Kate does and the routes into this and many other fields –and the skills needed.

“It was encouraging for them to gain an insight into jobs they hadn’t necessarily known existed. This really raised their awareness of the breadth of careers available to them in the music industry.

“Visits like this from real industry professionals are so valuable for our students and we are very grateful to Kate and Tian for sharing their experience with us.”
