New Esports championship sees Loughborough College players go head to head with students from across the country

Loughborough College players are going head to head with students from across the country in the FIFA 2020 College Lockdown Championship.

Sport students Joseph Goodwin, George Rawlings and Kian Cusack are representing the College in the first ever national college FIFA tournament from the Association of Colleges (AoC) Sport and the British Esports Association.

With students across the country learning from home as well as potentially caring for family members, self-isolating, volunteering and wanting to socialise over the summer, AoC Sport saw the competition as an ideal activity for students to get involved in.

Teams are drawn against other colleges in a Swiss Tournament format and use their Xbox One and Playstation 4 consoles to take part in weekly rounds, with scores entered online each week.Learners will also be given the chance to compete against English Colleges Football Association (ECFA) national footballers and in a showcase final on 1 July.

Loughborough College Sport Programme Area Lead Danny Lee said: “Esports is a great way to provide our learners competitive sport in these difficult times. There are 36.6 million gamers in the UK and eSports is becoming increasingly more mainstream.”
