An Oxbridge day hosted by Loughborough College for its sixth formers and for pupils from local schools and colleges is the latest in a programme helping its students explore opportunities and encouraging them to reach their potential.

“More than 30 of our sixth formers took part in the day and we were really proud of them. We want all of our students to aim high and we support them, whatever academic route they choose to pursue,” said Loughborough College Sixth Form Professional Studies and Social Sciences lead Glyn Conlon.

Representatives from Pembroke College, Cambridge, and from St Edmund Hall, Oxford talked to Loughborough College sixth formers as well as year 12 learners from Rawlins Academy and Iveshead School about the opportunities presented by higher education. They also gave them an insight into what they might expect from studying at Oxford and Cambridge and how the teaching and college system make them different to other universities.

It was a return to Loughborough College for Luke from St Edmund Hall, following his visit earlier in the term to talk to and work with year 12 and 13 sixth formers, including those applying to Oxford and Cambridge as well as to study for a degree in medicine.

Year 11 pupils from Martin High School, Humphrey Perkins School and Thomas Estley Community College also joined the day to hear about the opportunities hard work at GCSE could open up for them.

Glyn continued: “Through our tutorial programme at Loughborough College sixth form we encourage our students to explore the options available to them, whether that be university, Higher or Degree Apprenticeships or opportunities in some of the UK’s best institutions, like Oxford and Cambridge. The important thing is that they make an informed choice.

“This week we are very pleased to be welcoming representatives from Nottingham Trent University to our tutorials. Not only will they be working with our Year 12 students to look at opportunities at UK universities but they will also be running ‘Stress Less’ workshops with our Year 13 students to help them manage stress and workload as they prepare for their end of term examinations.”
