A talented student from Loughborough College has been named Physicist of the Year.

The top accolade was presented to James Brown by the Ogden Trust at Warwick University.

James is part of the unique Space Engineering programme delivered by Loughborough College in partnership with the National Space Academy.

Still in his first year at Loughborough College, James has also been selected from a competitive field to join Rolls Royce this summer to help design and build a drone.

The official presentation of the annual Ogden Young Physicist of the Year award came at the close of an evening of demonstrations and a lecture from Dr Rachel Edwards at the University.

“I was surprised but glad to even be nominated and when I found out I had won I was very happy.

“My teacher Andy McMurray was there at the presentation. My parents and sister were with me too and I know they were very proud,” said James.

“I travel for more than three hours in one day to get to lessons but it is worth it – I am really enjoying the Space Engineering course. The teaching is great and there are so many exciting industry opportunities, which will hopefully help me when I am applying to University – I plan to study Aeronautics and Astronautics.

“I usually get bored during summer holidays but there’s
no chance of that this year. I will be busy for four weeks at Rolls Royce, designing and building a prototype airborne drone.

“It was a competitive process but I am so pleased I was successful.

“I’ll be helping come up with something which can be used to inspect hard to reach areas in power plants – which could obviously have a huge impact on safety. I can’t wait.”
