Recycling insight sparks Loughborough College environmental initiative

Students have been offered a vital insight into recycling which has sparked a Loughborough College green initiative.

A wide-ranging talk for College engineers, electrical installation and motor vehicle students by Emma Hailes and Jake Clarkson from leading UK recyclers Electrical Waste not only supported learners’ course work but is also set to pave the way for hundreds of students and staff to positively impact the environment.

Information on topics including recyclable components and recycling processes boosted the Loughborough College students’ knowledge around important regulation, such as the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE). This stipulates that all businesses are responsible for electrical items which have reached the end of their life, until they reach their final destination – and that they consequently have a duty of care to audit the company they hand their waste to.

To help ensure that electrical waste is put on the path to an appropriate destination, the College’s Advanced Technology and Manufacturing department will be inviting learners and staff from across the College to recycle electrical items, in conjunction with City Electrical Factors and Electrical Waste.

Ndumiso Nsingo, Advanced Technology and Manufacturing curriculum manager said: “It was incredibly encouraging to observe the progress that has been made in recycling electrical waste. We are looking forward to working closely with Electrical Waste as we continue to build on our environmental policy and are dedicated to continuing to develop green initiatives which enable our students and staff recycle electrical waste correctly.”
