Rio 2016: Clegg and Simmonds take medal tally to seven for Loughborough College on Paralympic Games day six

The gold rush for Paralympics GB athletes from Loughborough College continued as Libby Clegg powered to an impressive sprint double with a victory in the 200m T11 final at the Games in Rio while in the pool Ellie Simmonds clinched bronze in the 400m freestyle - taking the College medal tally to five gold and two bronze with four days to go.

With the 100m title already secured, former College student Clegg and guide Chris Clarke dominated with the winning time of 24.51 seconds beating the Paralympic Games record from London 2012.

Clegg said: “I’ve massively surprised myself. I’ve had a really tough year and if you’d ask me ten months ago, I’d have said this wasn’t possible.

“When I moved into this classification I was pretty daunted and nervous but Chris has been amazing. He’s an incredible guide and has really helped me get through this.”

“We’ve got the World Championships next year and I can’t wait to get back into that stadium in London and race in front of my home crowd again."

Clarke added: “We have fun, we’re friends, we get there and get the job done. I’m just happy to be small part of her story.”

The night had begun with a bronze medal for S6 200m individual medley champion Ellie Simmonds.

The five-time Paralympic champion and former Loughborough College student touched the wall in 5:24.87 as she was beaten to gold by Ukraine’s world record holder, Yelyzaveta Mereshko.

“I don’t really know what happened, I just didn’t have anything at all in me tonight,” said Simmonds.

“I love the 400m freestyle, it made me qualify for the Paralympics in 2008, that’s the event I qualified in. I’ve been unbeaten for a long time but I just wasn’t good enough.”
