Rio 2016: Just ten days to go for Loughborough College Olympic athletes

With only ten days to go until this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio and with more than 20 athletes from Loughborough College set to compete, many have already arrived in Brazil.

Molly Renshaw flew out with the rest of the swimming squad on Friday from Heathrow to Team GB’s world class preparation camp in Belo Horizonte.

The largest ever pre-Games set-up for the British team, athletes competing in Rio will transit through the camp en route to the Olympic Village, only a short 45-minute flight away.

Loughborough College student Molly, who will be representing Britain in the 100m and 200m breast stroke, will use the camp for final phase training, acclimatization and rest and relaxation.

Molly, who is a 2014 Commonwealth Games medallist, is joined on the swimming team by Loughborough College alumni Siobhan-Marie O’Connor, a fellow Glasgow Games medallist, and Fran Halsall, who has won medals in World and European competition as well as in the Commonwealths.

Loughborough College students selected to compete for Team GB at the Olympics include Megan Jones for Rugby Sevens, Katie Clark for Synchronised Swimming, and Daniel Goodfellow for Diving. Degree student Lianna Swann is set to compete for Pakistan.

The flame will be lit at the Opening Ceremony in Rio de Janeiro on 5 August with the Games, the first to be hosted in South America, continuing until 21 August.

There will be close to 11,000 athletes from 206 nations -with 366 athletes from Great Britain and Northern Ireland competing across 22 sports.

It is the largest delegation for 24 years with more female athletes than ever before at an away Games with 164 women (44.8%) and 202 men (55.2%).

UK Sport, which funds elite sport in Great Britain, has set Team GB a target of 48 medals for 2016 but believes the final tally could be as high as 79.
