Rio 2016: Last day of sporting action for athletes from Loughborough College as Paralympics draw to close

As Rio 2016 starts to draw to a close for Paralympics GB, day ten marked the final day of sporting action for athletes from Loughborough College.

Four years ago Julie Rogers was one of the youngest athletes at the London Paralympics when she represented Great Britain in the sitting volleyball.

The 17 year old Loughborough College student made her return to the Games on Saturday but this time it was to the track to compete in the T42 100m.

Rogers narrowly missed out in a place in the final after finishing fifth in the first of two heats in a time of 17.41.

Elsewhere former Loughborough College student Ellie Simmonds was hoping to add to the Beijing gold and London silver she won in the 100m freestyle S6.

The 21 year old qualified third fastest in the heats – with Ukraine’sYelyzaveta Mereshko the one to beat later, after she set a new Paralympic record of 1:12.49.

Looking ahead to the evening’s final, Simmonds said: “I’m going to go out there and enjoy it the best I can. It was a good heat swim and I really enjoyed it. Its an advantage to see what the heats before had done to see what time I had to go but I’m happy with my time.

"It’s going to be really tough tonight but I’m excited to do my last swim at the Rio Paralympic Games. It would be great to go out on a high with a medal but I’m just going to do the best I can and try and swim a personal best.

"Anything is a bonus but I’ve come away with a gold medal. I’ve done three Paralympic Games and I’ve got a gold medal in each, so I’m just going to go out there, have fun and enjoy."

Ellie Robinson later clocked 1:14.43 to win bronze in the 100m freestyle S6 final with Simmonds finishing in fifth position.

It was the final night of action in the Olympic Aquatics Centre for ParalympicsGB swimmers who finished with a tally of 47 medals.

Simmonds won a world record 200m individual medley SM6 gold and bronze in the 400m freestyle.
