Rio 2016: Loughborough College swimmer Molly Renshaw smashes British record to make it to Breaststroke final

Loughborough College swimmer Molly Renshaw has smashed the British record to make it to the 200m Breaststroke final in Rio.

After missing out on London 2012, Renshaw is now in line for a medal in Brazil.

The 20 year old Loughborough College Sport student made it through to the semi-finals on day five as the fifth fastest qualifier with a time of two minutes and 23.37 seconds before clocking a British record of two minutes 22.33 seconds to qualify third fastest for the final.

The most successful swimmer in British Olympic history Rebecca Adlington backed Renshaw as she began competition with the 100m Breaststroke earlier in the Games to “go out there and own it.”.

Renshaw’s Olympic debut saw her miss out on progressing to the 100m Breaststroke semi finals by six tenths of a second – but she said it was only a preparation swim for her signature event.

"Things have been going great in training and the preparation camp couldn't have been better for me and I feel in good form and confident about my chances.

"This was just a bonus swim for me and it was great to get into the pool, experience the crowd and prepare for the 200m.”
