Rio 2016: Nicola White scores to help Team GB to hockey quarter finals on day six – and Olympic debutante Molly Renshaw competes in her first final

Loughborough College swimmer Molly Renshaw just missed beating her record in the 200m breaststroke final and a goal from former student Nicola White helped take Team GB’s women through to the hockey quarter finals on Day Six of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

The British women’s squad continued their unbeaten start to the Rio 2016 tournament with a 2-0 win over Japan yesterday evening.

Lily Owsley opened the scoring within five minutes, with Nicola White adding a second in the fourth quarter with an overhead smash.

They now face a game against the USA on Saturday to determine who will finish top of pool B, who in turn will face the fourth-place team in pool A.

Loughborough College swimmer Molly Renshaw was competing in her first final of her Olympic debut missed her personal best by half a second in the 200m breaststroke and coming in sixth on 2:22.72.

“I’m over the moon with that to be fair. My aim coming into this was to make the final. I’ve managed to do that and I’ve enjoyed it every step of the way,” said the 20 year old Sport student.

“It was a massive personal best [the day before] so to only be half a second off that again is my second fastest time.

“Missing out on London 2012 pushed me for these past four years so being so close this year will definitely push me for Tokyo 2020.”

Rie Kaneto of Japan claimed gold in the 200m breaststroke, while Yulia Efimova of Russia took silver and China's Jinglin Shi finished third.

Renshaw’s teammate Chloe Tutton finished fourth.
