Rio 2016: Loughborough College cyclist Sophie Thornhill claims second Paralympic medal on day four

Loughborough College cyclist Sophie Thornhill and pilot Helen Scott added bronze to the time trial gold they won earlier this week on the Rio velodrome.

The pair caught their New Zealand opponents in only four laps in the women’s tandem B 3km individual pursuit final.

The 20 year old Loughborough College Sport student said: “That really hurt. We just went for the catch and played to our strengths.

"It’s massive, we never even entertained the idea of a medal in this event.

“To come away with a medal is unbelievable.”

Thornhill and Scott won a gold medal and smashed the Paralympic record on day two of the Games in Rio.

Clocking 1:06.283 in the women’s B 1000 m time trial, they beat world champions Larissa Klassen and pilot Haleigh Dolman from the Netherlands by 0.776 seconds.

A new world record time and victory in the mixed C1-5 team sprint later on Sunday afternoon rounded off a highly successful track cycling campaign for ParalympicsGB.

Taking their tally of gold medals on the velodrome to eight meant the Great Britain team finished top of the track cycling medal table at Rio 2016 with eight golds, two silvers and two bronzes.
