Rio 2016: Team GB one win away from women’s rugby sevens podium

Team GB are one win away from a women’s rugby sevens podium finish in Brazil at the close of day two of the 31st Olympic Games.

A comprehensive 26-7 victory over Fiji in the quarter-final saw the side move to within a single win of the first Olympic final for the sport’s Games debut.

The Great Britain squad, which includes former Loughborough College student Clare Allan and current student Megan Jones as travelling reserve, qualified for the quarter-final following a 22-0 win over Canada earlier in the day, maintaining their record of not conceding a try in the pool stage.

Team GB play New Zealand in the semi-final today at 15.00.

Meanwhile, Team GB’s men’s hockey team bounced back from their 4-1 defeat to Belgium on day one to draw 2-2 with New Zealand.

The squad, which includes former Loughborough College student Henry Weir, play Brazil today at 22.00.

Day Three will see current Loughborough College student Daniel Goodfellow and 10m synchronized diving partner Tom Daley begin their Olympic campaign.
