Rio 2016: Thrilling win for Team GB women’s hockey and women’s rugby sevens secure quarter final spot

Team GB women’s rugby sevens made history and secured two convincing victories to secure a spot in the quarter final while the women’s hockey squad opener saw them secure a thrilling win on Day One of the Olympic Games in Brazil.

The women’s sevens side became the first British Olympic rugby representatives for over 100 years when they began their campaign yesterday and marked the occasion by finishing the day unbeaten following their 29-3 triumph against hosts Brazil with a 40-0 win over Japan.

Today will see the 12-strong Great Britain squad, featuring former Loughborough College student Claire Allan with current student Megan Jones as travelling reserve, face Canada at the Deodoro Stadium in their final pool game – having already secured a quarter-final spot.

Team GB’s women’s hockey team meanwhile got their Olympic campaign off to a great start with a thrilling 2-1 win over Australia.

The squad, which includes former Loughborough College student Nicola White, faced a late barrage from their opponents in a tense encounter but put in a gutsy performance to see off Australia.

Great Britain women’s next match is on Monday against India.

Earlier in the day, the Great Britain men’s hockey side, featuring former Loughborough College student Henry Weir, suffered a 4-1 defeat in their opener against Belgium.

They will face New Zealand for their second pool match later today.

Today will see Team GB in action across 15 sports with Loughborough College Sport student Molly Renshaw hoping to be in heats and semi-finals in the pool.
