Royal Navy celebration for Loughborough College student

A Loughborough College student selected for the Royal Navy is celebrating after successfully completing training – and being offered the chance to continue his career in America.

Sam Rimmer was accepted by the UK naval force straight from completing his Public Services course with the College and after eight rigorous weeks is now thrilled to get underway with specialist training, with the prospect of a move to the US.

“The training in phase one at Raleigh was tough. You couldn't take your eye off the ball for a second but pass out was really good,” said Sam.

“My training for an underwater warfare specialist role has begun at HMS Collingwood, and I have been told I could move quickly through the ranks – potentially being promoted to leading hand within 18 months.

“I’ve also been offered the opportunity to go out and live in Virginia, in America, for two years - after I've done my first sea deployment.

“But in the immediate future I’m heading to Wales for leadership training and I might also be going to Germany for adventure training.

“I’m loving the Navy life.”

Loughborough College Public Services lead Tim Turner said: “Sam’s achievement is outstanding.

“After two intense months he has moved from basic civilian to sailor and now he’s specialising, with some fantastic naval opportunities on the horizon.

“The College is consistently placing high calibre candidates with the armed forces and Sam is our latest success. We are all very proud of him.”
