Zambia selection sees Loughborough College volunteer begin fundraising challenge

A Loughborough College student chosen to join a leading international volunteering project has embarked on a major fundraising challenge.

After a rigorous selection process, Liz Hyde is set to spend six weeks working with impoverished schools and communities in Africa - but must reach a target of £5,000 before departing with Volunteer Zambia Sport in May, all while in the final year of her degree.

The 21 year old, who is is studying for a BSc in Sport Science and Management at Loughborough College, is aiming to raise enough through donations and activities to sustain her time on the programme, which was established ten years ago to create a positive impact amongst people in Zambia affected by high levels of unemployment, crime, exclusion and health risks, including HIV and AIDS.

“I teach disabled children trampolining and am involved in the Coach and Volunteer Academy in Loughborough so I have experienced first hand how sport can develop communities and change lives and was desperate for the chance to do what I could to support the Zambia project. That’s why after a three week, nerve-wracking wait following my final interview I was thrilled to be selected,” said Liz.

“I have set up a donation page and am lining up as many fundraising activites as possible, so far including The Beast – a mud-soaked 40-obstacle course including hills and water splashes and also a sponsored trampoline bounce.

“I aim to be working alongside other UK staff and students in local schools and with communities and key stakeholders in Zambia, delivering lessons and arranging events which enable people to play and progress in sport.

“The project has such a huge impact I am determined to reach my target so I can get out there to help.”
