BTEC SPORT - Opportunities for Student Athletes

The BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport is a vocational 3 A Level equivalent course that allows progression onto HE and into employment. Students can study a shorter 90 Credit Diploma (1.5 A level equivalent) or Subsidiary Diploma (1 A level equivalent) as stepping stone qualifications. These courses explore different areas of employment within the sports sector, giving students a broader knowledge base to benefit their career. Transferrable skills are also developed facilitating progression into employment and HE study outside sport.

At the last OFSTED subject specific inspection sport at Loughborough College was graded outstanding. The college has an elite sport team, all of whom have experience of top-level sport and can use their knowledge and experience to support learners through their course and also assist with suitable exit and progression routes.

Previous elite athletes who have benefitted from the Loughborough College Sport BTEC programmes include Sarah Stevenson (taekwondo); Aaron McKibbin and Ross Wilson (table tennis); Tonni Duggan, Jordan Nobbs and Izzy Christenson (football); Lizzie Simmonds (swimming); Elise Christie (short track skating); Sophie Hahn (athletics); and Katie Summerhayes (snow sports).

The Extended Diploma consists of 19 units, which explore a variety of different areas, including:

  • Anatomy and Physiology and Physiology of Fitness
  • Sports Coaching and Assessing Risks
  • Analysing Sports Performance
  • Fitness Training and Programming
  • Injuries in Sport
  • Sports Psychology
  • Current Issues in Sport
  • Physical Education

The course is delivered in a vocational manner, with assessments ranging from written reports, portfolios, and posters to verbal assessments, presentations, and practical observations.

You will need:

  • Five GCSEs at grade C/4 or above, including English Language and Maths Level C/4
  • Mature students will be considered based on their previous qualifications and/or relevant work experience
