Role overview
This Level 3 Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship is designed for those looking to build a skilled career as a light vehicle technician. Working with cars and vans, you’ll train in a variety of settings, from manufacturer dealerships to independent garages, gaining the expertise employers demand.
Throughout your apprenticeship, you’ll combine hands-on workshop experience with college-based training, learning how to carry out everything from routine servicing and maintenance to complex fault diagnostics and repairs.
This qualification also prepares you for the future of the motor industry, covering advanced vehicle technologies such as:
- Hybrid and electric vehicles
- Alternative fuels
- CAN bus systems
- Diagnostic techniques using scan tools and oscilloscopes
By completing this programme, you’ll develop the technical knowledge, practical skills, and professional behaviours required to work confidently as a qualified vehicle service and maintenance technician.
Entry requirements
GCSE Grade 9-4 Maths and English (certificates to be seen by lecturer and Functional Skills tutors for exemption purposes). You will also need a job in the sector in which you have a contract of employment.

- Main dealer and manufacturer-aligned garages – servicing and repairing vehicles to brand standards
- Independent garages and workshops – carrying out diagnostics, maintenance, and repair across multiple makes and models
- Fleet operators and logistics companies – maintaining light commercial vehicles and vans
- Specialist repair centres – focusing on electrics, hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs), or advanced diagnostics
- Fast-fit centres – performing servicing, MOT preparation, tyres, brakes, and quick repairs.
Progression opportunities
Successful completion of this Apprenticeship could lead to Higher Education courses or a Higher Apprenticeship at level 4 or 5.
