Lighting Designer Illuminates Students with Technology Talk

Wednesday 23rd April 2025

Lighting designer Eli Ward of Lumineux Lighting shared some bright ideas during a fascinating talk with first year JTL Electrical Installation apprentices earlier this week.

Speaking in front of the learners, Eli explained the importance of a professional lighting designer who is an expert in light levels, unified glare ratings and current lighting legislation when pricing quotations for lighting contracts.

Eli also spoke about new innovations and developments in the industry, and the important role British manufacturers are playing in the future of emergency lighting and battery technology.

Following an interesting talk, Eli then showed the apprentices the latest type of fire rated downlights and explained how the changes in legislation had influenced Emergency Lighting laws and the responsibilities that result.

Freddie Taylor, a JTL first year apprentice was impressed by Eli’s talk, and shared: “He really engaged with our group and explained in depth the importance of being compliant. It was an important lesson, and we learnt a lot.”

Eli set the students numerous fun and challenging scenarios involving lighting calculations, encouraging them to use the skills they’ve learnt to solve the problems.

Charlie Harrison, also a JTL first year apprentice added: “It was great to hear from Eli, he’s very knowledgeable! He knew a lot about the physics side of lighting which I found especially interesting.”

The talk was organised by Electrical wholesaler SRM Electrical and Eli will be returning to Loughborough College later in the year to speak with more Electrical Installation students.
