Former Loughborough College student Jake Blythe has been honoured at Buckingham Palace after completing his Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

Jake, who completed his Level 3 BTEC National Extended Diploma in Uniformed Protective Services at Loughborough College in 2025, joined fellow Gold Award achievers for a special celebration hosted by Prince Edward, The Duke of Edinburgh.

The event featured a speech from Prince Edward in addition to a series of motivational talks from Gladiator Ella-Mae Rayner, explorer Ash Dykes, former rugby player Ed Jackson and more, each sharing inspiring stories of resilience and overcoming adversity.

To earn his Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, Jake completed a four‑day expedition in the Peak District, a residential programme in the Lake District, several long-distance runs, and a year of volunteering in his local community. A dedicated marathon runner, he is now beginning his Royal Navy training at HMS Raleigh, preparing for his future in a Seaman Specialist role.

When reflecting on his achievements, Jake said: “I am very proud to have achieved my Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. I thoroughly enjoyed studying my Uniformed Protective Services course at Loughborough College, especially the trips that we had the opportunity to attend, as these helped me gain a well-rounded understanding of the Public Services sector.”

Loughborough College Public Services Lecture, Stuart Taylor, also attended the celebration event and shared: “Jake was a brilliant student - he always worked hard, completing his assignments to a high standard, and was very proactive with his Duke of Edinburgh preparations. He is a fantastic role model for any future Public Services students, and we are proud to call him a Loughborough College alumnus.”

Public Services students at Loughborough College learn from expert lecturers who have worked in a range of roles within the uniformed services, and gain valuable knowledge and skills from expeditions, guest speakers and training exercises. Find out more on the Loughborough College Group website.
